Passing by as I was considering how to photograph a heavy-laden apple tree, 85-year-old Granny Valjantsina spiritedly asked what I was photographing. We talked about this year’s abundant apple and potato harvest, the new birth of faith, the revival of her local Orthodox church after decades of Soviet repression, the church’s recent feast day, and Granny Valjantsina’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
