Harvesting Potatoes, Tsjerablichy 2013. Збор бульбы, Цераблічы 2013 год.
The potato is fundamental to the Belarusian diet. The planting and harvesting of potatoes are thus moments of intense focus in the Belarusian cycle of the year. Private ownership of farmland remains forbidden in Belarus. As a result, beyond their home gardens, villagers are dependent on whatever small allotment local authorities might decide to assign from marginal state-farm land each spring.
Several generations of an extended family will cooperate to plant and harvest an allotment. This family had to work through two thunderstorms but managed to clear its allotment in the one day family members could spare from their jobs and from other, constant barnyard chores.
