As a result of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania’s long-term policy of inviting Tatar settlers as soldiers and border guards, about 20 villages in Belarus bear a name incorporating the ethnonym “Tatar”.  Eight of these villages are called Tatarshchyna.  Tatarshchyna in Smaron’ District lies side by side with Panara (photo of the day for October 15, 2021), separated only by the course of the Panarka River.  The two villages remain distinct, reflecting the practice of Belarusians and Tatars to live in good-neighborliness but apart.

Татаршчына (Смаргоньскі раён) — за толькі 200 метраў ад Панары, але цалкам асобная вёска.
