This church was one of many built by the imperial Russian authorities as part of the intense campaign of Russification and imposition of Russian Orthodoxy on the Belarusian lands, which had joined the general 1863-64 revolt against Russian imperial occupation. Russian occupation flowed from the three partitions of the Polish Commonwealth in the last quarter of the 18th century.
