Summer roads in eastern Smarhon’ District 2017 (I/X: Kreva, Suts’kava, Rasla, Zhodzishki, Panizhany, Ajtsvily, Ljeshchanjaty, Tsjelaki, Sjemjanki, Milutsi, Abramaushchyna, Lakachy, Dybun’ki, Paharel’shchyna, Shchani, Navasjolki, Vojstam, Sjaljets, Ratsavichy, Khutar Vojstam.
I set out on this photo journey to visit the cluster of traditional Roman Catholic roadside shrines on the east bank of the River Vil’lja in Smarhon’ District. However, as always happens when wandering through countryside so full of history and cultural patrimony, I could not resist photographing other things as well: a working grain mill, German World War I graves and bunkers (the eastern front was static in Smarhon’ District for more than two years), a monument to Polish soldiers who fell in the 1919-21 war against the Bolsheviks, landscapes, village architecture.

Меў намер засяроджвацца на шматлікіх прыдарожных каплічках ва ўсходняй часцы Смаргоньскага раёна. Хаця, як бывае на вандроўках па беларускай спадчыне, немагчыма было не зьвяртаць увагу таксама на іншыя вартыя рэчы: рабочы млын, нямецкія магілы Першай сусьветнай вайны, помнік польскім жаўнерам упалых у вайне сураць бальшавікоў, пейзажы, вясковае дойлідства.
The road to Smarhon’ from the west passes through Kreva, site of the castle (now in ruins) where the Polish crown and Grand Duchy of Lithuania agreed to a dynastic union in 1385. This bucolic view always makes me stop for a photo.
