Homage to the Central Prypjats’ IV/Паклон Сярэдняй Прыпяці (Частка ІV)
The industrious, children-filled villages of the central Prypjats’ region in southern Belarus belie the commonplace that villages throughout Europe are dying. These villages radiate vitality, prosperity, generosity and hope while ensuring, as strongly as any other places I’ve ever visited, that their traditions — under unremitting pressure for the past century — thrive and are passed on to succeeding generations. Even the outsider feels that he is coming home when entering this region. A smile and a bow in gratitude to these villages and their inhabitants.
Працавітыя, поўныя дзяцей вёскі цэнтральнай Прыпяці абвяргаюць звыклае меркаваньне пра тое, што ўсе вёскі Еўропы гінуць. Гэтыя вёскі сьвецяцца жыццём, дабрабытам, шчодрасьцю і надзеяй і адначасова клапоцяцца – так старанна, як у любым іншым месцы, куды я трапляў, і нягледзячы на зацятае супрацьстаяньне апошнага стагоддзя – пра росквіт сваіх традыцый і іх захаваньне наступнымі пакаленьнямі. Нават староньні чалавек адчувае сябе, як дома, калі прыяжджае ў гэтыя мясьціны. Усьмешка і паклон удзячнасьці гэтым вёскам ды іх жыхарам.

I had the privilege to meet Grandfather Pavjel in 2007 as, at the age of 81, he was harvesting potatoes in his garden. He recalls walking the 50-kilometer round-trip to Turau twice in one day in his youth. Now 84 and growing more infirm, he retains his lively sense of humor and continues faithfully to attend the major festivals at his parish church in nearby Azdamichy.
З дзедам Паўлам мне пашчасьціла пазнаёміцца ў 2007 годзе, калі яму быў восемдзесят адзін год. Тады дзед Павел выбіраў на агародзе бульбу. Ён узгадваў, як у маладосьці двойчы за суткі хадзіў у Тураў – 25 кілометраў туды і 25 назад. Цяпер дзеду Паўлу восемдзесят чатыры, і ён аслабеў за гэты час, але не губляе свайго знакамітага пачуцьця гумару і па-ранейшаму старанна наведвае сьвяточныя службы ў прыхадской царкве ў Аздамічах.
