It’s not easy to remember that Mats’vjej, almost as tall, and weighing almost as much, as his seven-year-old-sister Chesa and as adventurous and curious as Chesa and their older brother Jahor, is only three-and-a-half. In fact Mats’vjej has grown so quickly that friends and neighbors joke it’s already time to call him Mats’vjej Ivanavich — as they will address him when he is an adult. Yet his shyness at certain moments reminds one that he is still only three-and-a-half. Here Mats’vjej’s beloved aunt Virka, alert to his tentativeness, coaxes him into the barn to pet the two-day-old calf which seems forbidding at a distance.
