This photo is from a trip to survey the patrimony of western Lida District and of Iuje District with Anton Astapovich, chairman of the Belarusian Association for the Preservation of Historical and Cultural Monuments (БДТАПГК).
Allees and roadside columns of trees not only create a wind- and snow-break but also offer shade for travelers as well as shelter for birds and other animals. Equally important, they provide a crucial continuation of Belarus’s historical landscapes. Given that regional authorities have had many such columns cut down, it is always inspiring to come across roadside lines of trees which have escaped the axe.
