This Orthodox church was built on the foundations of a Roman Catholic church during the harsh re-imposition of Russian imperial rule and Russian Orthodoxy after the abortive Polish-Belarusian-Lithuanian uprising of 1863-64. Under the Soviet regime the authorities profaned the church by using it as a club.
