Hard work and quiet pride in ownership always achieve higher productivity than the collective farms: smallholdings are vital to farming in Belarus. Wandering through riverside villages in the marshlands southeast of Pinsk, I chanced upon this man and his family diligently working their small acreage, already flourishing at the end of May.
