Easter morning re-dressing of roadside crosses, Daniljevichy 2015. Велікоднае пераапрананьне прыдарожных крыжоў, Данілевічы 2015 г.
Having burned the previous year’s cloths on Holy Saturday (photos of the day for May 13-16), women of Daniljevichy meet at sunrise on Easter Day to re-dress village crosses. They perform this rite with commercially-produced synthetic-fiber cloths rather than, as in the past, with home-woven linen.
У Вялікую суботу бабулькі зьнялі ды спалілі тканіны, у якія ў мінулым годзе “апранулі“ прыдарожныя крыжы ў вёсцы (гл. здымкі 13-16 траўня). На досьвітку Вялікадня зьбіраюцца, каб “пераапранаць“ крыжы ў новыя фартушкі. Ужо некалькі гадоў выкарыстоўваюць магазінныя сінтэтычныя тканіны замест ільнянога палатна вытканага ў хаце.
After re-dressing the cross, the women celebrate Christ’s resurrection. Пасьля пераапрананьня сьвяткаюць Уваскрасеньне Гасподняе царкоўным гімнам.
Does it ever happen that someone comes along and takes the cloths that are put on the crosses?
If one excludes the godless of the Bolshevik/Soviet period, no, it would be considered a sacrilege.
