Orthodox St. George’s Day falls on May 6. The date traditionally marked the day when villagers led their cows in procession out to pasture for the first time in the year. Here women from the Polesian village of Bjarezhtsy, having walked in procession to a rye field at the edge of the village and danced around the flag and oak branch and flowers held by village men, sing St. George’s Day songs and pray to God for a prosperous season.
