Traditional beekeeping in Polesia (Pripet Marshes): autumn inspection of tree hives (kalody) and collection of honey. Tsjerablichy woods 2018.
Forest beekeeping is an ancient Polesian tradition. Beekeepers in Polesia use three types of hives for forest honey cultivation. The most traditional beekeeping uses tree hollows (bortsi – борці). More common are the use of hollowed-out portions of tree trunks hoisted into oak or pine trees (kalody – калоды) or regular box hives carted into the forest in spring and returned to the homestead in autumn.
Since 2009 I have been fortunate to photograph local math teacher and expert beekeeper Misha Naskjevich on spring, summer and autumn inspections of his hives…and collection of summer and autumn honey. Некалькі разоў на працягу апошных 9 гадоў мне пашанцавала здымаць вясновы й восеньскі агляды калодаў ды збор мёду з калодаў і ляснога пчальніка церабліцкім настаўнікам па матэматыцы й выдатным пчалярам Мішам Наскевічам. Сёлета на кастрычніцкім агляду 5 калодаў, спадару Мішу ўдалося зьбіраць соты мёду з чатырох, з кожнай калоды атрымалася іншы смак. Проста цуд.
