Photos of the Day for October 2, 2017

Horsecarts.  Rubel’ (Rubjel’) 2017.

Rubel’, in the middle of central Polesia’s Stolin District, was the largest village in Belarus until the early 1970s.  With about 4,700 inhabitants Rubel’ remains the second largest village in Stolin District; it is renowned not only for the industriousness of its small-holder farmers but also for producing scores of Orthodox priests since 1991.

One is struck by the continual movement of horsecart traffic through Rubel’ to and from the allotments the local collective farm allocates in distant fields.

Returning from his field, a villager passes the late 18th century Orthodox church of the Archangel Michael (1796), an outstanding example of Polesian wooden church architecture.
