Functionalism and the Zakopane style in Hlybokaje: civil-servants’ housing quarter by Juliusz Klos and other houses.
After surveying some of the Zakopane-style buildings on the outskirts of Hlybokae (photos of the day for September 18), there was not enough time for more than a drive-by tour of the better-known Polish-era six-building housing quarter for civil servants. Therefore the following photos are from an initial survey in October 2015.
The complex was designed in the evolving functionalist style of the mid-1920s by Juliusz Klos, one of the leading proponents of a “national style” of Polish architecture.

The three houses of the quarter on Kamsamol’skaja Street 25-29 are in fair condition.

The three houses on Vol’naja Street (numbers 20-24) are in worse shape, either through ruinous reworking or neglect.

The house at number 20 is disfigured by a covering of silicate bricks.

The nun in the preceding photo was hurrying to house number 22, which local authorities are now allowing the Roman Catholic church to use for charity work.
Законная сястра ў апошным фотаздымку сьпяшалася да № 22, які мясцовія ўлады далі рыма-каталіцкаму касьцёлу карыстоўваць як цэнтр сацыяльнай дапамогі.
House number 24 has suffered from neglect, but the garden is well-tended.
Зьнешні выглад № 24 занядбаны, але жыхары старанна даглядаюць свой агарод.
The Zakopane style of the house at Vol’naja Street 19 remains imaginable in the house’s lines and shape, but the use of siding and modern roofing material have turned the building into a bunker.
